AVG installation is failing

If you are installing AVG and the installation process fails, there are several steps you can take to install AVG successfully.

1. Make sure you are installing AVG under an account with administrative rights.
AVG needs to copy files into folders that are not accessible by accounts without administrative rights. Please make sure that you are logged into Windows with administrative rights.

Windows XP

To make sure that are logged into Windows XP as a user with administrative rights:

  1. On the taskbar, click Start -> (Settings) -> Control Panel.
  2. Click Switch to classic view in the top left pane, if the option is available.
  3. Open User Accounts.

All user accounts will be listed on the page. Each account has a status (Computer administrator, Limited account, etc.). Before installing or reinstalling AVG, make sure that you are logged in under an account with Computer administrator status.

If you are not sure which account you are currently logged into, please open the Start menu. The name of the account will be listed either in the title of the Start menu, or next to the Log Off option.

Windows 7

To make sure that you are logged into Windows 7 as a user with administrative rights:

  1. On the taskbar, click Start -> Control Panel.
  2. Open User Accounts.
  3. Click Manage another account.

All user accounts will be listed on the page. Each account has a status (Administrator, Standard user, etc.). Before installing or reinstalling AVG, make sure that you are logged into Windows under an account with Administrator status.

If you are not sure which account you are currently logged into, please open the main User Accounts page. The current user is displayed in the right part of the page.

Windows Vista

To disable the UAC function in Windows Vista:

  1. On the taskbar, click Start.
  2. Click Control Panel, and then click User Accounts.
  3. Click Turn User Account Control on or off, and then clear the Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer check box.
  4. Click OK, and then restart the computer.

2. Always use the latest AVG installation file.
The AVG program is continuously being improved, including the installer, which is responsible for the correct installation process. By using the latest installation package, there is no need to download larger program and virus base updates immediately after installation. To download the latest installation file, visit the Download section of our website, select your product, and then click the AVG for Windows link.

3. Close all running programs and disable security applications.
Before running the installation file, please close all unnecessary programs and make sure that there is no security application that could interfere with the installation process. Typical examples of programs that may prevent AVG from being successfully installed include anti-spyware utilities and registry monitors/cleaners, which prevent access to the Windows registry. AVG needs to be installed into the registry to provide the functionality and protection it was designed to offer.

4.  Remove possible conflicting applications.
If you are using an application which might be in conflict with AVG, please disable or uninstall it completely before running the AVG installation. In general, AVG may conflict with applications that provide the same or similar functionality as an AVG component. This is especially important for other programs with one or more of the following features:

  • Real-time protection against viruses (like AVG Resident Shield)
  • Monitoring or controling network traffic (like AVG Firewall)
  • Checking or filtering e-mails (like AVG E-mail Scanner)
  • Checking websites, web content filters (like AVG Online Shield)

For a list of programs known to be in conflict with one or more components in AVG 2011, please see FAQ 3283.

5. Disable User Account Control (UAC) (Windows Vista and Windows 7 only).
In Windows Vista and Windows 7, the User Account Control function may in some cases create a copy of specific AVG files in a virtual folder. This limits AVG functionality after installation.

AVG installation fails if the C: drive is not present

  4. Right-click the the USB flash drive, and then click Change Drive Letter and Paths.
  5. Click Change.
  6. Select Assign the following drive letter, click the letter C, and then click OK.
  7. Click Yes when you are prompted to confirm the drive letter change.

I think I have a virus on my computer. What steps should I follow to install AVG?

If you think you have a virus on your computer, please install AVG by following the steps described in FAQ 3250.

If it is not possible to install AVG this way because of an infection, please install AVG in Safe Mode as described in FAQ 3618.

Using AVG together with other security software products

AVG 2011 is compatible with some other security software products, specifically Microsoft Security Essentials, Avast Free, Avira Free, Norton and McAfee, to provide you with protection. However, compatibility also depends on the technologies employed by the other security software present on your computer. This means that if your computer has multiple compatible security software products installed, you may notice a slowdown of your computer speed and abnormal behaviors in applications. In some extreme cases, using multiple security products may cause data loss or system freezes.

When installing AVG on your computer, it is possible to continue without uninstalling the compatible software. However, we highly recommend uninstalling all conflicting applications before continuing with the installation of AVG in order to avoid any unintended errors that may occur as a result.

Links for downloading the removal tools for conflicting anti-virus products are available in FAQ 3274.

If the AVG installation detects a conflicting application that has already been removed, please follow the steps described in FAQ 3617 to resolve the issue.

A complete list of the conflicting applications is available in FAQ 3283.

Examples of the unwanted behavior may include:

  • AVG cannot remove detected infection
If there is another anti-virus application with realtime protection installed together with AVG on your computer, AVG may have issues with removing infected files. AVG Resident Shield will detect the malware and display the warning, however the virus removal could be blocked by the other anti-virus software that has detected the mentioned file as well.
This behavior is known for the situation when Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) software is installed together with AVG, however it may occur also with other security software.
  • AVG Anti-Rootkit scan detects other security software parts
AVG Anti-Rootkit scan may detect drivers, dynamic libraries and executable files of other security software that is installed on the same computer. If you are not sure whether the detected rootkit belongs to the other security software, you can uninstall the software temporarily and run the Anti-Rootkit scan again.
For example, you may encounter this situation if you use AVG together with McAfee Total Protection or with Avast Internet Security.
  • LinkScanner verdict icons will overlap with SiteAdvisor icons
If using AVG together with McAfee SiteAdvisor, the verdict icon in the search result may be displayed incorrectly in the Firefox browser. Icons of SiteAdvisor in this situation may overlap with the verdict icons of AVG LinkScanner.

Upgrading to a higher AVG edition

If you have purchased a higher edition of AVG 2011 than you currently have installed, it is not necessary to reinstall it on your computer. You only need to enter your new license number into the AVG application to access the additional functionality:

  1. Open the AVG Program.
  2. Double-click the License component.
  3. Click Activate and use the copy&paste method to enter your new license number.

You may be prompted whether you want to install the additional features offered by your new license. In this case, confirm the installation and follow the installation wizard. The new features will be added automatically.

Removal tools for conflicting anti-virus products

The AVG 2011 installation package is able to detect conflicting anti-virus products that may prevent some AVG components from functioning correctly. If a conflicting program is detected, it must be uninstalled before installing AVG. Generally, programs can be uninstalled using the standard Windows Add or Remove Programs option. To uninstall the conflicting program, please proceed as follows:

Windows XP

  • Open menu Start -> (Settings) -> Control Panel.
  • Double-click on Add or Remove Programs.
  • Click on the program you want to uninstall in the list of installed programs and select Remove.
  • After uninstallation of the program please restart your computer and run the installation of AVG.

Windows Vista/7

  • Open menu Start -> (Settings) -> Control Panel.
  • Click on Programs -> Uninstall a program.
  • Click on the program you want to uninstall in the list of installed programs and select Remove.
  • After uninstallation of the program please restart your computer and run the installation of AVG.

If you encounter any issues uninstalling a conflicting program, we recommend using a dedicated removal utility or instructions designed specifically for each program:

After using the uninstallation utility or following the removal instructions, restart your computer and run the AVG installation.

Note: If you experience any issues uninstalling a conflicting product, please contact the technical support of the program's vendor.

How to install AVG when AVG LinkScanner is installed

If you are using AVG LinkScanner as a protection against malicious websites and would like to use the AVG Anti-Virus or AVG Internet Security (all of which also contain the LinkScanner protection), it is necessary to uninstall the AVG LinkScanner first to allow installation of AVG. To replace AVG LinkScanner with AVG, please proceed as follows:

  • Uninstall AVG LinkScanner
    - Open Start -> Programs -> AVG LinkScanner® -> Uninstall AVG LinkScanner®.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Download AVG installation file from the Download section of our website, according to your AVG edition.
    - When you are prompted, please do not open this file directly from the Internet, but click the Save button and choose a location, where the installation file should be stored (we recommend saving the file to the Desktop).
  • Proceed as described in FAQ 3250 to install AVG.

Slow AVG installation

Please note that depending on your system configuration and other factors, it may take up to several minutes to install AVG 2011. The installation may at times become unresponsive and then proceed correctly. In this situation, please allow the installation process to continue.

You will receive an error message if there is a problem. If you do not receive an error message, the installation is proceeding correctly.

If the installation was not successful, please refer to FAQ 3262 for help with common installation issues.

AVG installation informs about Roxio driver

The AVG installation process is able to detect various conflicting applications on your computer. One of the applications that can affect the AVG program functions is Roxio Easy CD & DVD Creator. If an old version of this program is installed on your computer, the AVG installation process can show the following message:

Installer has detected that there is an outdated version of the program Roxio Easy CD & DVD Creator, which contains a bug that (among others) can cause problems with AVG 9.0.

To rectify this situation, we recommend you to visit this Roxio webpage, which contains latest update for this product. After updating, please run the installation again, it should proceed correctly without the above mentioned warning. If you are not using Roxio Easy CD & DVD Creator at all, you can uninstall it to make sure that the AVG installation will finish correctly.

In case of any issues with updating or uninstalling your Roxio software or the related cdr4_2K.sys driver, please contact Roxio Technical Support.

Please note: Driver Cdr4_2k.sys, which is detected by AVG setup, was also distributed by Microsoft in Windows Media Player. If you do not have the Roxio software installed, we recommend that you download and install available updates for Windows Media Player from the following website:
http://www.windowsupdate.com

It is possible to continue with AVG installation, even if you are not able to update or uninstall the mentioned Roxio driver. However, we strongly recommend to perform the suggested Roxio update or uninstallation.

AVG installation and update on server fails because of incorrect license number

Note: This FAQ article is intended for server operating systems only.

In specific situations, AVG installation or update on a server can fail with the following message:

Severity: Error
Error code: 0xC0070643
Error message: General internal error.
Additional message: ProcessAvgLicense: Processing license failed (0xE0010406)
Context: MSI custom action

The error may be caused by using an incorrect AVG license number on your server, i.e. home security AVG or AVG Free edition license. Please activate your AVG with a license number matching with your AVG edition, as described in FAQ 3583.

In case that AVG was previously installed on a server using an incorrect license, also following error can be displayed when re-activating the license number:

An error occurred when saving the configuration.
The license number does not allow using of the product on this operating system.

To solve the issue, it is necessary to uninstall AVG and then to install it again with an appropriate license number:

  • The installation package is available in the Download section of our website (filename of the package needed for the installation on a server starts with letters avg_msw)
  • General instructions for AVG 2011 installation are available in FAQ 3250
  • Recommendations for installing AVG on server operating systems can be found in FAQ 3266

Windows Defender is automatically turned off during installation

Please note that Windows Defender is only disabled and not removed from your computer.
Disabling Windows Defender is important, as it prevents conflicts with AVG. They are both security applications that check files you are working with. Because they try to check files at the same time, conflicts may arise. The results may include freezing, crashes, or computer slowdowns. It is generally not recommend to use more than one security product on a single computer.

AVG installation detects already removed conflicting application

AVG installation wizard is able to detect incompatible or conflicting application before installing AVG. However some applications might be detected even after their uninstallation.

This is usually caused by unremoved record in Windows Repository.

Use AVG utility to fix the record:

AVG 2011 - conflicting applications

Here is a list of applications that are known to be in conflict with one or more components in AVG 2011:

Ashampoo Firewall FREE
Issue: It is not possible to update AVG even if all AVG processes are allowed in the firewall, the error message "The connection with the update server failed" is displayed.
Solution: Uninstalling Ashampoo Firewall FREE is the only solution. Workarounds, such as editing AVG services properties, are not safe and present a security risk (any intruder can then take control of the service or attack it from the interactive desktop).

Better File Rename
Issue: Older versions of this application cause Windows Explorer to crash with the active AVG 9.0 Shell Extension Test option when the user right-clicks.
Solution: Update Better File Rename from the developer's website.

Eset Smart Security 4
Issue: The computer is slowed down or crashes repeatedly.
Solution: It is generally not recommended to use more than one security solution on a single system. They will compete for resources, which may result in slowdowns, crashes or in no protection at all. We recommend uninstalling Eset Smart Security 4. Please see FAQ 2277 for a remover application.

Microsoft Security Essentials
Issue: The computer is slowed down or crashes repeatedly.
Solution: It is generally not recommended to use more than one security solution on a single system. They will compete for resources, which may result in slowdowns, crashes or in no protection at all. We recommend uninstalling Microsoft Security Essentials.

PC MACLAN
Issue: A blue screen crash occurs when browsing shared MAC folders using PC MACLAN software. This is caused by a MACLAN component that is not compatible with the AVG Resident Shield driver.
Solution: To eliminate the issue, it is necessary to uninstall the PC MACLAN application.

System Protect
Issue: AVG cannot be installed or is installed incorrectly.
Solution: During the installation of AVG, turn off the System Protect. You may also need to create an exception for AVG later.

PC Tools Antivirus
Issue: Compatibility issues
Solution: PC Tools Antivirus is detected as a conflicting application during the AVG installation. We recommend uninstalling PC Tools Antivirus.

ZoneAlarm Firewall
Issue: ZoneAlarm Toolbar behaves as a rootkit. It injects AVG processes and causes displaying of error message during the computer startup.
Solution: To solve this situation using ZoneAlarm Free Firewall it is enough to update it to version 9.2.102 or higher. In case of using ZoneAlarm Pro Firewall we recommend uninstalling the ZoneAlarm Toolbar. It will be possible to use AVG and ZoneAlarm Toolbar together in one of the next updates of ZoneAlarm Pro Firewall.

Lock Folder XP
Issue: The computer crashes repeatedly.
Solution: We recommend to uninstall the Lock Folder XP to solve this issue.

Sunbelt Personal Firewall
Issue: Sunbelt Personal Firewall may cause AVG update process to monopolize the CPU time.
Solution: Sunbelt Personal Firewall is detected as a conflicting application during the AVG installation. We recommend uninstalling this application.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Issue: Full version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware contains resident part which causes operating system to freeze with active AVG Resident Shield.
Solution: This issue occurs when both components are running simultaneously. Please uninstall Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware or disable its resident part.

Webroot Spy Sweeper
Issue: Webroot Spy Sweeper may prevent AVG 2011 from installing correctly.
Solution: We recommend uninstalling this application prior to installing AVG 2011.

BeTwin VS
Issue: If this application is installed operating system may crash after installing AVG. This issue occurs on computers with Windows 7 32-bit operating system. The problem is caused by the BeTwin VS application.
Solution: It is necessary to uninstall the BeTwin VS application.

RelevantKnowledge
Issue: The application is blocking Internet browsing with Internet Explorer and AVG Online Shield enabled.
Solution: It is necessary to uninstall the RelevantKnowledge application.
