E-mail Protection and Anti-Spam

E-mail scan takes so long

If scanning of your e-mail messages takes a long time and the Anti-Spam component is installed, we recommend that you disable the on-line checking option in Anti-Spam configuration or set it up to the lowest level. Please note that the level of your protection is not affected significantly.

To disable the on-line checking option please follow these steps: 

  • Open the AVG program.  
  • Select Advanced Settings from the Tools menu.
  • Navigate to the Anti-Spam branch and expand the settings.
  • Click on the Performance option.
  • Untick the Enable on-line checking option.

You can also change the Engine performance settings up to the lowest level on the same dialog as follows:

  • Move the slider to the Low memory position.  
  • Confirm changes by clicking on the OK button.
 

How can I check which e-mail plugins I have installed?

To check which e-mail plugins you have installed, please proceed as follows:

  1. Launch the AVG program (the AVG icon on the Desktop).
  2. Double-click the E-mail scanner component where is the item Installed e-mail protection:.

In case you need to add or remove some e-mail plugin from AVG, please proceed as follows:

  1. Download the correct AVG installation file. AVG installation files are available here.
  2. Select the product that you have purchased.
  3. Click the AVG for Windows link:
    • If unsure which file is suitable for your system, get the AVG Download Manager file
    • If you wish to use the file for installation on a computer without Internet connection, use the 32bit or 64bit installer file (if unsure, choose 32bit)
  4. When you are prompted, please do not open this file directly from the Internet, but click the Save button and choose a location, where the installation file should be stored. We recommend saving the file to the Desktop.
  5. Locate the downloaded AVG installation file (it has a four color square icon and its name starts with AVG_...) and launch it by double-click on its icon.
  6. Please follow the wizard and select the Add or remove components option.
  7. In the Component Selection window, please tick the E-mail Scanner plugin(s) you wish to use.
  8. Finish the installation wizard and restart your computer.
 

Which plugin should I install to scan e-mails?

It is important to choose the correct e-mail plug-in to install during the AVG installation process. It depends on your e-mail client. If you use an email client for sending/receiving e-mails which has its own plug-in available in AVG, please install this specialized plug-in in preference:

  • AVG MS Outlook Extension if you use Microsoft Outlook.
  • AVG Plugin For The BAT! for The BAT! e-mail client.
  • If you use any other program (Outlook Express, Incredimail, Mozilla etc.), please install the Personal E-mail Scanner plug-in.

The installation of e-mail plug-ins should be done following way:

E-mail doesn't work after installation of AVG

In some unique cases, it is possible that your connection to the e-mail server will be blocked after installation of AVG. To find the cause of this issue, please try to disable AVG Firewall and E-mail Scanner. These two components can affect your e-mail client connection. To disable them, please refer to FAQ 2130.

In case disabling one or both of these components did help, please contact AVG Customer Services as described in FAQ 2216 for further assistance.

If you cannot download your e-mails after disabling the Firewall and E-mail Scanner, it is possible that there is some conflict between AVG and another application on your computer. In such case, please uninstall AVG temporarily (FAQ 1996) and contact our AVG Customer Services with as detailed description of the issue as possible.
