E-mail Scanner

STARTTLS encrypted e-mail messages are not scanned by Personal E-mail Scanner

AVG Personal E-mail Scanner is currently not able to scan messages encrypted with STARTTLS.

These messages will be received into your e-mail client, however they will not be scanned before you open them. Once opened, the attachments are scanned by AVG Resident Shield and threats will be blocked.

Please note that normal encryption (SSL and TLS) is fully supported.

Outlook Express error message: Your SMTP server has not responded

When sending e-mail messages from Outlook Express, it may report the following error message:
Your SMTP server has not responded in X seconds. Would you like to wait another X seconds for the server to respond?

The issue is caused by insufficient server timeout period in Outlook Express.

To prevent this, you can increase the timeout period in Outlook Express to allow more time for your email server to respond:

1. Open Outlook Express.
2. Click the Tools drop-down menu at the top of the Outlook Express window, then click Accounts.
3. Choose the account you would like to increase the timeout period for and click Properties.
4. Open the Advanced tab.
5. Drag the slider bar under Server Timeouts to increase its value.
6. Click OK to save your settings.

  • in MS Outlook, outgoing e-mails in RTF and HTML format are not certified due to technical limitation

Note:
Enabling or disabling certification does not have any effect on testing of your messages with AVG. The option to enable or disable checking of e-mails can be set up after double-click on E-mail Scanner in the main AVG window.

E-mail doesn't work after installation of AVG

In some unique cases, it is possible that your connection to the e-mail server will be blocked after installation of AVG. To find the cause of this issue, please try to disable AVG Firewall and E-mail Scanner. These two components can affect your e-mail client connection. To disable them, please refer to FAQ 3857.

In case disabling one or both of these components did help, please contact AVG Customer Services as described in FAQ 2216 for further assistance.

If you cannot download your e-mails after disabling the Firewall and E-mail Scanner, it is possible that there is some conflict between AVG and another application on your computer. In such case, please uninstall AVG temporarily (FAQ 3448) and contact our AVG Customer Services with as detailed description of the issue as possible.

E-mail messages in Mozilla Thunderbird are detected in temporary folder

When receiving e-mail messages to Mozilla Thunderbird client, AVG will detect those that are infected in a temporary folder first. This is a feature of Thunderbird - the messages are first saved outside the application before being received. As AVG detects them in that folder, they are not received.

To prevent this, you can set Thunderbird to download the messages directly without the use of a temporary folder:

  1. Open Mozilla Thunderbird.
  2. On the Tools menu select Options.
  3. Click Advanced on the top of the opened window.
  4. On the General tab click Config Editor.
  5. Confirm access to advanced settings.
  6. In the opened window type into the Filter field:
    mailnews.downloadToTempFile
  7. Right click it when found and select Toggle.
  8. Close the window, and then click OK.

Your messages will still be checked by AVG thanks to the Personal E-mail Scanner.
