{jkefel kefelui=[sliders] title=[Checking Virgin Media Mail e-mails with AVG Personal Email Scanner]}
To set up AVG protection for e-mails on your Virgin Media Mail account, please follow these steps:

1. Set AVG to check the e-mails:

Open AVG

Click Tools in the top menu, and then select Advanced Settings

In the opened window select E-mail Scanner, and then Servers under it

Go to POP3 -> AutoPOP3, and edit this server this way:

Set Type of login to Fixed host;

POP3 server:
pop3.virginmedia.com

Local port: 10110

Connection: "SSL" (encrypted connection to port 995)

Make sure that the server is activated

Now go to SMTP -> AutoSMTP, and edit the server:

Type of login: Fixed host

SMTP server: smtp.virginmedia.com

Local port: 10025

Connection: "SSL" (encrypted connection to port 465)

Make sure that the server is activated

This way, the AVG E-mail Scanner is set up to communicate with the Virgin Media Mail server using SSL encryption.

2. Set your e-mail client to use AVG for sending/receiving of the e-mails

Configure your e-mail client so that it connects to the AVG e-mail
scanner instead of the actual e-mail server. The servers configuration
will be:

POP3

server: 127.0.0.1

port: 10110

user name / password: same as before (i.e. your e-mail username and password)

encryption: NONE ( SSL disabled)

SMTP

server: 127.0.0.1

port: 10025

authentication: yes

user name / password: same as before

encryption: NONE ( SSL disabled)

{/jkefel}
{jkefel kefelui=[sliders] title=[E-mail messages in Mozilla Thunderbird are detected in temporary folder]}
When receiving e-mail messages to Mozilla Thunderbird client, AVG
will detect those that are infected in a temporary folder first.
This is a feature of Thunderbird - the messages are first
saved outside the application before being received. As
AVG detects them in that folder, they are not received.

To prevent this, you can set Thunderbird to download the messages directly without the use of a temporary folder:

Open Mozilla Thunderbird.

On the Tools menu select Options.

Click Advanced on the top of the opened window.

On the General tab click Config Editor.

Confirm access to advanced settings.

In the opened window type into the Filter field:
mailnews.downloadToTempFile

Right click it when found and select Toggle.

Close the window, and then click OK.

Your messages will still be checked by AVG thanks to the Personal E-mail Scanner.
{/jkefel}
{jkefel kefelui=[sliders] title=[How to deactivate the AVG Personal E-mail scanner?]}
If you are using a POP3/SMTP/IMAP based e-mail client and there is a problem with e-mail delivering, or you need to disable the Personal E-mail Scanner for any another reason, follow these steps:

Open AVG.

From top menu Tools select the Advanced settings option.

Navigate to the Email Scanner branch to expand the tree structure.

Select the Servers option.

POP3 -> AutoPOP3
Disable the Activate this server and use it for sending/receiving e-mails option.

SMTP -> AutoSMTP
Disable the Activate this server and use it for sending/receiving e-mails option.

IMAP -> AutoIMAP
Disable the Activate this server and use it for sending/receiving e-mails option.

This way, incoming and outgoing messages will not be scanned any
more. If you wish to enable the e-mail checking again, please enable the
"Activate this server.." option for the required server (POP3 for
incoming, SMTP for outgoing e-mails or IMAP for incoming and outgoing
e-mails).
{/jkefel}
